Anat Lelior, the first Israeli surfer ever to compete on the WSL Championship Tour, delivered the standout result of her rookie season on Wednesday, eliminating world No. 1 Gabriela Bryan in the second round of the Outerknown Tahiti Pro to book her place in the quarter-finals.
Surfing in the heavy, hollow left of Teahupo'o off Tahiti's south coast, Lelior posted a two-wave heat total of 12.73 against Bryan's 1.46 - a rout in conditions that punished any surfer who could not find rhythm in the swell.
It was a genuine upset. Lelior, 26 and from Tel Aviv, had begun the event ranked 17th in the world in her first season on tour, facing a Hawaiian opponent who arrived in Tahiti sitting at No. 1 in the rankings. ONE reported that the defeat was Bryan's earliest exit of the season.
The win sends Lelior through to a quarter-final berth at one of the most demanding stops on the Championship Tour calendar, a result that instantly ranks among the best of her young elite career.
It is also not unfamiliar water for her. Lelior competed at Teahupo'o once before, at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she finished ninth in the women's shortboard event on the same reef pass. She was also Israel's surfing representative at the Tokyo 2020 Games, placing 17th.
Lelior's route to the Championship Tour was itself a milestone for Israeli sport. She secured her place on the elite tour in March 2026 through a strong finish on the Challenger Series in Newcastle, Australia, becoming the first Israeli surfer - man or woman - to reach the sport's top level.
Raised surfing the inconsistent beach breaks of the Mediterranean in Tel Aviv, Lelior won her first Israeli national title as a preteen and held it for years afterward. She has also collected a gold medal for Israel at the 2022 Maccabiah Games and finished sixth at the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games in Puerto Rico, the best result by an Israeli at that event.
The Outerknown Tahiti Pro continues through August 18, with Lelior now guaranteed a career-best result at the event regardless of how the quarter-final unfolds against a field that has just lost its top seed.
