Real Madrid have pulled off what ONE is calling the quiet deal of the summer, confirming the signing of Levante striker Carlos Espí in a move completed within hours rather than the drawn-out sagas that usually accompany a Bernabéu arrival.
The 21-year-old centre-forward joins on a five-year contract running to 30 June 2031, with Madrid activating the €25 million release clause written into his Levante deal to get the transfer over the line immediately, according to ONE's reporting and confirmed in Real Madrid's own official announcement.
The move fills the gap left by Gonzalo García, who departed for Fulham this summer, and gives Madrid a different kind of number nine to the one he replaces: a physical, aerially dominant target man rather than a mobile, pressing forward.
ONE reports that the deal moved at a startling pace once Madrid re-entered the race, with Levante close to sanctioning a sale to Brighton and other suitors, including Villarreal and reported interest from Manchester City, also circling before the Spanish champions swooped. English clubs Hull City and Brighton were both prepared to trigger the release clause themselves.
At 1.94 metres, Espí built his reputation on heading rather than pace or dribbling. Last season he ranked second in La Liga for the proportion of his goals scored with his head among players with ten or more league strikes, behind only Atlético Madrid's Alexander Sørloth, per ONE's analysis.
The numbers behind the move are modest by Bernabéu standards but tell their own story: Espí scored 11 La Liga goals last season, either side of an injury-hit stretch, as Levante fought off relegation, and finished the campaign as the league's best young player under the age of 23.
Across three seasons since joining Levante's academy from UD Alzira in 2022, he made 66 appearances and scored 20 goals for the Valencia-region club, having been born locally in Tavernes de la Valldigna. He has represented Spain at both under-19 and under-20 level.
This is not the first time Madrid have looked at him. ONE notes the club made an approach as far back as March 2024, only for Levante to knock it back and keep their emerging forward for another 18 months of development.
Reports in Spain have tied the signing to head coach José Mourinho, who is said to have pushed hard for Espí's recruitment and persuaded club president Florentino Pérez to move quickly rather than risk losing him to a Premier League rival.
There was no unveiling fanfare befitting a marquee superstar arrival, and Espí will have to fight for minutes in a squad packed with attacking talent. But if his heading power and finishing translate from the Ciutat de Valencia to the Bernabéu, ONE suggests this understated deal could yet rank among Madrid's shrewdest business of the summer.
