The result was not a routine recovery. Israel had lost to Romania and Czechia, leaving little room for another incomplete performance. The coaching staff accepted that the required margin called for risk, including extended phases without a goalkeeper. That approach exposed space when possession changed, but it also helped Israel create the pace and volume of attacks needed to chase the target rather than merely the win.
A 19–14 half-time lead supplied belief without completing the job. Poland reduced the gap to three early in the second half and kept the match between two and four goals for a long stretch. Israel therefore had to produce a second surge after the initial momentum had disappeared. The decisive sequence came late, when the lead grew beyond the seven-goal threshold and the team protected it through the closing possessions.
Asaf Sharon scored 13 goals and Tal Eckstein added eight, according to Sport5. Sharon’s Latin spelling and national-team record are also documented by the European Handball Federation. Goalkeeper Yonatan Ben-Shitrit made seven saves in the first half, while Eitan Elbaz contributed five later in the match. Those interventions mattered because the attacking gamble could only work if Israel found enough defensive stops to turn pressure into transition opportunities.
The victory changes the tournament but does not complete the qualification task. Israel now enter the classification stage with access to the World Championship route, not a guaranteed ticket. The distinction is important: the Poland performance created another opportunity after the earlier defeats, and the next fixtures will determine whether the comeback has a larger consequence.
For Israeli handball, the most encouraging part is the response to a precise competitive demand. The players knew the margin, lost control of it temporarily, and still found the final run required.
