The 18-year-old guard, who played for Israel's youth national team at last summer's European Championship, has returned to Hapoel Galil Elyon on a long-term contract, ONE reported, closing the loop on a journey that briefly took him away from the club that first spotted him as a young teenager in the Upper Galilee.
Ashkenazi, from Kibbutz Beit Hillel, originally signed with Galil Elyon back in 2023, agreeing to a long-term deal with the club at just 15. He grew up through the Galilee outfit's youth pathway before the war forced a disruption to that plan.
With his family relocating to central Israel during the fighting, Ashkenazi spent last season with Maccabi Tel Aviv's youth academy instead, a stint in which he posted averages of 8.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game, according to ONE.
His form did not go unnoticed at the national level. Ashkenazi featured for Israel's youth national team at last summer's European Championship, part of a generation of prospects the federation has been tracking closely.
Now, with circumstances settled, the 1.90m guard has opted to pick up where he left off in the Galilee rather than continue his development in Tel Aviv. ONE's report did not detail the exact length or terms of the new contract beyond describing it as long-term.
Galil Elyon, who compete in the Israeli Basketball Premier League out of their Pais Hall base in Kfar Blum, have leaned heavily on homegrown talent in recent seasons as they've established themselves in the country's top flight.
