Ironi Kiryat Shmona have confirmed that an agreement is in place to sell Cristian Martínez to Slovan Bratislava, drawing a line under the Panamanian midfielder's two seasons in the Upper Galilee. The club's confirmation on Sunday was careful in its wording: what exists between the two sides is a concluded understanding rather than an announced transfer.

Martínez himself travelled to Slovakia over the weekend to complete the final formalities. The terms have nonetheless taken shape quickly — reporting in Israel puts the deal at three years, and the player's registration record now lists him at Slovan with a contract running to June 2029 and an arrival dated 19 July. Neither club has disclosed the fee, which remains unreported.

The timing owes everything to this summer's World Cup. Panama went out at the group stage without a point, yet Martínez emerged with his reputation enhanced.

Deployed on the flank rather than in his customary central role, he was named Player of the Match in the 1-0 defeat by Croatia. The interest that followed came from Europe and South America alike.

Slovan officials indicated they had tracked the midfielder across several transfer windows and had to see off considerable competition to sign him — a persistence that finally paid off once Panama's tournament ended.

His Kiryat Shmona record explains the demand. The 29-year-old, who has won 69 caps for Panama, arrived on loan in July 2024 and made 33 appearances in his first season before the club made the deal permanent.

In 2025-26 he added 31 appearances and four goals from central midfield, establishing himself among the more dependable foreign players in the Israeli top flight.

For Slovan the urgency is straightforward: the Slovak champions open their Champions League second qualifying round tie this week and want their new midfielder registered and available as early in the European campaign as possible.

For Kiryat Shmona, who missed the championship playoff last season, the sale continues a familiar and financially necessary pattern — recruit shrewdly, extract a strong season or two, and sell into Europe. The undisclosed fee will now fund the next iteration of that model, and the search for a successor in the middle of the pitch.
