Maccabi Netanya are in advanced negotiations for Brazilian centre-back Zé Marcos, according to Sport5, with a loan identified as the proposed structure. The report says discussions have reached their final stages, but neither Netanya nor either Brazilian club involved in the player’s registration had announced an agreement. The correct status is therefore advanced talks, not a completed signing.
The identity check is important because Zé Marcos is a common football name. The player in question is José Marcos Alves Luis, born on 1 February 1998 and listed by the Brazilian Football Confederation as a Sport Recife defender. Sport Recife’s announcement gives his height as 1.88 metres and records a career that includes Athletico Paranaense, Juventude, Vitória, Red Star Belgrade and Rad Beograd.
Any move requires more than Netanya agreeing terms with the player. Zé Marcos belongs to Vitória and joined Sport on loan through 30 November 2026. Sport’s unusually detailed contract notice says the loan has no automatic purchase option, divides salary obligations between the two Brazilian clubs and includes performance incentives. A switch to Israel would consequently require the existing loan to be ended or restructured and Vitória, as the parent club, to approve the new registration path.
The recent workload explains Netanya’s interest more clearly than the reputation attached to Brazil’s youth teams. Sport’s official profile records 119 appearances, 107 starts and 10,557 minutes across the 2023, 2024 and 2025 seasons. It also credits him with winning 64 per cent of his defensive duels and making 146 interceptions in the 2025 Brazilian top flight, placing him among the competition’s ten leading defenders in that category.
Those figures suggest a defender accustomed to repeated first-line decisions rather than a developmental signing. Sport5 reports that he began as a left-back before moving inside, which may offer Netanya an option on the left side of the central pairing. The key scouting questions are how well his interception timing transfers to a higher defensive line, whether his duel efficiency holds when defending larger spaces and how reliably he can progress possession under pressure.
His international background is real but should not carry the analysis by itself. Sport Recife confirms that Zé Marcos played at the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Chile. His European club experience came earlier in his career in Serbia and Montenegro; the more relevant evidence for Netanya is the volume and continuity of his recent senior football in Brazil.
The next meaningful markers are permission to leave Sport, agreement with Vitória, a medical and registration through the Israel Football Association. Until those steps are documented, Netanya have a credible and well-defined target whose contractual route is complex—not an additional centre-back already secured for the new season.
