Maccabi Tel Aviv are ending Shane Hunter's loan spell early, recalling the American forward-center from Legia Warsaw and folding him straight into Oded Kattash's frontcourt for the coming season, the club confirmed and ONE reports.
Hunter, 25, signed a three-year contract with the yellow-and-blue in the summer of 2024 but never actually suited up in Tel Aviv. Instead he was immediately loaned out to continue developing against senior competition in Europe, first with Legia Warsaw in Poland.
The bet paid off. Across last season Hunter averaged 9.2 points, 5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks a game for Legia while shooting 63 percent on two-point attempts, numbers that speak to his efficiency as a rim-runner and finisher inside. In the Basketball Champions League specifically, he was even more productive: 8.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and a block a night, with a 12.0 efficiency rating.
"Shane Hunter completes a deep and versatile frontcourt for us," Kattash said, according to ONE. "He gained important experience in Europe last season. He is a big man who moves very well without the ball, shoots at a high percentage from two-point range, rebounds well, is highly mobile in the pick-and-roll and affects opposing shots with his blocking."
At 2.08 meters (6'10"), Hunter arrived at Maccabi with a track record of winning. Before signing with the Israeli champions, he spent a season with Sweden's Norrköping Dolphins, where he averaged 14.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocks across 30 regular-season games and helped the club to the domestic title, earning Finals MVP honors in the process.
He played his college basketball at Nova Southeastern University in Florida before making the jump to professional ball in Europe.
The recall gives Kattash another mobile, shot-blocking big to work with as Maccabi rebuild their frontcourt depth ahead of the new campaign, with Hunter now expected to compete for real minutes in Tel Aviv rather than continue developing on loan.
