Orian Goren has waited years for this moment, and on Friday he finally got it: a first appearance in Barcelona's senior shirt, and immediate approval from the Catalan press that watches that shirt most closely.
The 17-year-old Israeli midfielder was sent on by Hansi Flick at half-time of Barcelona's preseason friendly against CE Europa, part of a wave of academy substitutions the German coach used to run the rule over his La Masia prospects. Barcelona won the closed-doors match 4-1 at the Joan Gamper training ground, with goals from Ibrahim Diarra, Hector Fort, Ebrima Tunkara and Alex Gonzalez either side of a CE Europa reply.
ONE reports that Sport, one of Barcelona's two dedicated daily football papers, singled out Goren among the youngsters given a chance, writing that he "had a positive impact" during his time on the pitch and "registered good minutes." It is exactly the kind of notice a teenager three years into his time at La Masia hopes to attract.
Goren joined Barcelona's academy in 2023 after coming through the youth ranks at Maccabi Petah Tikva, and the club's staff have long rated him among the most gifted attacking midfielders in his age group, comparing his vision and passing range to graduates like Andres Iniesta and Pedri. He can play centrally or off the left and has already featured for Barcelona in the UEFA Youth League.
Born in Savyon, Goren has represented Israel at both under-17 and under-19 level, scoring once in seven appearances for the U17s. Friday's cameo was only a preseason friendly, and Flick used the second half largely to test fringe and reserve players rather than chase a result, but for an Israeli prospect being watched closely back home, a debut in Barcelona's first-team shirt - and a favourable Spanish write-up alongside it - is a real marker of progress.
Israeli football has sent academy graduates to Barcelona before without them making the step up to Camp Nou; Guy Asulin trained with Pep Guardiola's squad in preseason in 2009 without it leading to a first-team breakthrough. Goren's supporters will hope his path proves different, but for now the compliments from Barcelona's own press corps are the headline.
