Atlético Madrid have opened contact with Juventus to sound out a deal for Jonathan David, according to a report from ONE that lines up with a wave of Italian transfer coverage on Wednesday.
The Canadian forward, who joined Juventus on a free transfer from Lille last year and signed a five-year contract through 2030, has fallen outside Luciano Spalletti's plans in Turin. ONE reports the 26-year-old is open to leaving if the right terms materialise, with Atlético among the clubs weighing a move for him.
Crucially, this is still described as an informal approach rather than a formal negotiation. No bid has been tabled and no fee discussed, with Italian outlets including Calciomercato, Football Italia and Tuttosport all framing it as Atlético requesting information on David's situation rather than opening substantive talks.
The interest is tangled up with two other pieces of business. Spalletti's preferred striking target is Atlético's Alexander Sørloth, the Norwegian international the Bianconeri have already held early discussions over, with a valuation in the €30-40 million range reported in Italy.
David could become a makeweight in that deal, offered by Juventus as part of an exchange package to bring the fee for Sørloth down. Some Italian reports also link the situation to Nico González, the winger who spent last season on loan at Atlético from Juventus and could return to Spain if the pieces fall into place.
Nothing here is close to done. As the Italian transfer window heads toward its 1 September close, all sides are said to be feeling out whether a three-way puzzle involving David, Sørloth and González can be solved before deadline day.
David has scored regularly for Canada and was a leading marksman in Ligue 1 during his Lille years, but his first season in Turin brought limited game time. A switch to Atlético, who play in the Champions League this season, would put him back in a major European competition should the move advance.
