Three weeks after scoring the goal that won Spain the World Cup, Ferran Torres was asked the question that has followed him into pre-season: will he still be a Barcelona player when the new La Liga campaign kicks off? His answer, reported by ONE, gave little away. "Right now I have a contract with Barcelona," Torres said, "but honestly, in football you can never know what will happen."
It is the kind of studiously careful line footballers reach for when a move is genuinely in the air, and in Torres's case the speculation has been building for weeks. Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning European champions, have been repeatedly linked with the 26-year-old, and reports in Spain and France in recent days have described the French club as going "all out" to sign him, with a basic agreement on personal terms already in place ahead of any formal talks between the two clubs.
The Luis Enrique connection only sharpens the narrative. The PSG coach managed Torres and the rest of Spain's squad through their World Cup triumph before returning to club football in Paris, and he is widely reported to be one of the driving forces behind PSG's pursuit.
Barcelona's own position is complicated by the small print of the deal that brought Torres from Manchester City. His contract at Camp Nou runs until the summer of 2027, but any extension would trigger an additional clause worth around €8 million payable to City, on top of the roughly €65 million Barcelona already paid for him in 2021 and 2022. That has left the club yet to open formal renewal talks, even as the transfer noise around Torres grows louder.
None of it has dented what he did for Spain in July. Torres came off the bench in the World Cup final against Argentina and struck the winner in extra time, in the 106th minute, as Spain won 1-0 in New Jersey to claim their second world title. It made him only the second Spaniard, after Andrés Iniesta, to score a World Cup-winning goal.
That heroics has not automatically secured his place in Hansi Flick's attacking plans for next season. Barcelona have already strengthened out wide this summer, completing deals for Newcastle's Anthony Gordon and Borussia Dortmund's Karim Adeyemi, both signed until 2031 as the club reshapes its forward line following the league title win.
For now, Torres remains a Barcelona player with no departure confirmed by either club. But his own words, and the scale of PSG's reported interest, suggest this transfer saga is only just getting started.
