The Israeli lightweight, fighting for the first time in more than a year, needed the full distance at the Menora Mivtachim Arena before the scorecards went his way, Sport5 reported, in what the outlet framed as the clearest statement yet of his readiness for the sport's top promotion.
Almeida is no journeyman gatekeeper. The 35-year-old Brazilian has fought in the UFC itself and is ranked among the top 100 lightweights in the world, according to Sport5 — making Barzilay's win over him the most significant result of his career to date.
The loss was Almeida's sixth as a professional, dropping his record to 15-6 by Sport5's count, while Barzilay improved to 8-1.
For Barzilay, the win closes out a frustrating stretch away from the cage. He had been slated to challenge Christian Spian for the UWC lightweight title, and later to fight American Landry Ward in June, but both bouts fell through before he could step in against Almeida instead.
Sport5 cast the performance as proof to Dana White's organisation that Barzilay is ready to test himself against the sport's elite — the latest marker in a rise that began at Souko Gym in Herzliya, where the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist first built his amateur pedigree before turning professional and fighting on cards in Las Vegas.
GFN 1: Israel vs. The World, staged by the Gordon brothers' promotion, brought a heavyweight international fight card to Tel Aviv, and Barzilay's win over a recognised UFC name gave the home crowd one of its headline results of the night.
With his name already said to be on the UFC's radar, Barzilay will hope this result — rather than another cancelled date — is what finally gets him signed.
