Lamine Yamal has spent the opening days of Barcelona's season wearing an expression nobody at Camp Nou is used to seeing on him, and Spanish television believes it has worked out why. ONE reports that pundits on El Chiringuito have pointed to a personal, rather than a footballing, explanation for the teenager's flat mood.
The images that started it all came from Barcelona's 5-0 win at Elche on August 23, their La Liga season opener. Raphinha and Fermín López scored twice each and new signing Karim Adeyemi got on the scoresheet, but the headline moment came when Yamal was substituted in the 65th minute and trudged to the bench looking serious and clearly unhappy, a picture that spread quickly on social media.
On El Chiringuito, host Josep Pedrerol said the club intends to sit down with Yamal and ask him directly what is wrong. But panellist Jota Jordi offered his own theory on air, insisting the sullen mood has nothing to do with football form or dressing-room tension.
"It's a 19-year-old guy whose three best friends from ten years ago are leaving. It's solely because of that," Jota Jordi said, according to the Spanish reports relayed by ONE, naming Alejandro Balde, Marc Casadó and Héctor Fort as the three team-mates in question.
All three came through La Masia alongside Yamal and have known him since childhood. Jota Jordi's argument is that watching them exit the club at roughly the same moment, just as a promising new season is getting under way, has hit the 19-year-old harder than any transfer saga involving someone else would.
Balde's situation is the most advanced. He was left out of the Elche squad entirely after a Sunday conversation with head coach Hansi Flick, who reportedly told him: "Until you're at 100% knowing what you want, I prefer you don't come, go home, think about it and we'll talk later." Manchester United have been strongly linked with the left-back before the transfer window closes.
Casadó, once tipped for a move to the Saudi Pro League, is now expected to leave for another European club instead, while Fort, who spent last season on loan at Elche, is again expected to depart, with Real Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund among the clubs mentioned in Spanish coverage.
Flick himself has offered a different, far less dramatic reading of the same moment. Asked about Yamal's demeanour after the Elche match, the coach said: "He had a minor issue, a headache. Lamine is a genius, he's had three weeks of vacation and has only been able to train for a few days. It's normal that he's not at the highest level."
The two explanations are not necessarily incompatible, and neither Barcelona nor Yamal himself has confirmed either version. For now the story remains a Spanish media reading of a single viral image, credited on air to a pundit rather than to any statement from the player or the club.
