Luka Modrić is not done yet. AC Milan's 40-year-old midfield metronome has agreed to extend his stay at San Siro for another season, ONE reports, with the formal signing expected within days.
Citing transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano and Italian sources, ONE says Modrić has agreed a new one-year deal that will run until June 2027 — closing, for now, the retirement speculation that had trailed him since Croatia's exit from the World Cup.
Italian outlets including SempreMilan and Yahoo Sports, drawing on reporting from MilanNews and Fabrizio Romano, say the extension keeps Modrić's terms broadly unchanged from last season: roughly €3.5 million a year plus performance bonuses.
The new contract is expected to be put on paper this week, with several reports pointing to Wednesday as the likely signing date.
Modrić joined Milan as a free agent last summer after 13 years at Real Madrid, where he became one of the most decorated midfielders of his generation, winning the Champions League repeatedly and the 2018 Ballon d'Or.
His first season in Serie A produced 37 appearances across all competitions, with two goals and three assists, a workload interrupted at times by a jaw injury but otherwise a rare show of durability for a player who turned 40 in September.
The renewal comes just weeks after Croatia's run at the 2026 World Cup ended in the round of 32, beaten 2-1 by Portugal — a result that reopened questions about how much longer Modrić intends to keep playing at the top level, at club and country alike.
For Milan, locking down their captain-in-all-but-name for a second season answers at least one of those questions: whatever he ultimately decides about international football, the Rossoneri will have him running their midfield again in 2026-27.
