The Israel Football Association has published the fixture list for the 2026/27 Liga Alef season, and the pairing opening the campaign in the South division brings together two clubs who each spent exactly one season in Israeli football's top flight: Hapoel Marmorek and Hapoel Hadera meet in round one, ONE reported.
It reads as a modest fixture on paper - both sides play in the third tier of the Israeli pyramid - but each carries more history than its current level suggests. Marmorek, based in the Rehovot area, won promotion to the old National League for the only time in the club's history at the end of the 1971-72 season, beating Maccabi Shaarayim 2-1 in a playoff final settled by two goals from Tony Sharabi. The club came straight back down after that single 1972-73 top-flight campaign and has spent the decades since in the lower divisions.
Hadera's history runs deeper still. Photographs of the club's earliest players date back to 1939, when, according to accounts held with the club's archive, its founders travelled to away matches by horse and cart. Hapoel Hadera have remained a fixture of the Israeli game since, even as the club has drifted through the divisions.
Elsewhere in the Liga Alef South round-one draw, ONE reported that Shimshon Tel Aviv host Beitar Yavne, while Maccabi Kiryat Malakhi take on Hapoel Mahane Yehuda.
In the parallel North division, the opening round pits Maccabi Ata Bialik against Hapoel Migdal HaEmek, with Hapoel Beersheba facing Beitar Neria among the other headline pairings, the report said.
Both Liga Alef sections field 18 clubs apiece for the new season, which the Israel Football Association has scheduled to open on September 4, 2026, a week after the State Cup's fifth round begins on August 28.
The calendar includes a mid-season break from October 13-17 - timed around the Sportiad - with no league fixtures played, followed by a longer winter break running from November 14-21.
The regular season is due to finish on April 16, 2027, with playoff finals following from April 23-26, divisional finals on May 6-7, and the promotion play-off between the two divisions' contenders scheduled for May 13-14.
Round one itself is still more than a month away, but Marmorek and Hadera at least now have a date and an opponent to build their pre-season toward.
