Maccabi Netanya are closing in on a deal to bring Nigerian winger Christian Nwachukwu to Israel on loan, with an option to make the move permanent further down the line, Sport5 reports.
Nwachukwu, 20, is Sheffield United property, having been signed by the Championship club from Bulgaria's Botev Plovdiv in February 2025 for a reported fee in the region of €1.2 million on a contract running to the summer of 2027. This past season he was farmed out on loan to Serikspor in Turkey to accumulate first-team minutes.
According to the report, Netanya's American owner Ross Kastin is pushing for exactly this kind of profile — a young, developing talent his club can coach up and potentially sell on for a profit, rather than an established, expensive veteran. Kastin's Aliya Capital Partners took control of the club from longtime owner Eyal Sagal, and his stated strategy since taking over has centered on player trading alongside on-field ambition.
A fleet-footed left-sided winger capable of playing on the right or through the middle, Nwachukwu made his name at Botev Plovdiv, where he was part of the squad that won the Bulgarian Cup and also picked up Europa League experience, before scoring four goals in his breakthrough campaign that persuaded Sheffield United to move for him.
Sport5 reports the deal is being brokered through agent Satio Chachmon, and describes it as close to completion rather than finished — the structure being discussed is a loan with a purchase option, which would let Netanya evaluate Nwachukwu in Ligat Ha'al before committing to a permanent transfer fee.
The move would fit the pattern of Netanya's summer rebuild under Kastin's ownership, with the club also said to be working on bringing in a defender and monitoring the futures of players already on the books, including forward Aziz Aouatrah, with a replacement plan in place should he depart.
Separately, Sport5 notes that goalkeeper Omer Niron has returned unexpectedly to full training after completing rehabilitation from the ankle injury that ended his season early, a development the outlet frames as a signal to clubs who had been circling him as Netanya's number one is otherwise occupied.
Nothing is signed yet, and the loan-with-option structure still needs to be finalized between the two clubs, but if it goes through, Nwachukwu would become the latest young overseas prospect to test himself in Israeli football before, potentially, moving back up the ladder in Europe.
